MINISTER for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Hon. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, has visited several schools in the Greater Accra Region to assess how the national School Feeding Programme is being implemented.
Speaking to the media after the tour, Hon. Lartey said the visits were meant to monitor activities on the ground so that parliament can have a clear and accurate picture of how the programme is working.

She explained that when the ministry appears before the parliamentary committee, the information they present will be based on what they have personally seen during the visits.
She noted that the ministry is pleased with the progress made so far and is finalising its report. According to her, a more extensive monitoring exercise will begin next year, in line with President Mahama’s goal of ensuring that schoolchildren receive healthy and nutritious meals to support their growth and well-being.

Hon. Lartey also shared that during one of the visits, a headmaster reported a significant increase in school enrolment due to the School Feeding Programme, making it difficult to take in additional pupils.
She said this challenge shows why it is important for the ministry to make regular field visits, as staying in the office alone does not reveal the full situation in the schools.

She added that these firsthand observations will help strengthen discussions in parliament and allow the committee to make well-informed recommendations. These recommendations will then be sent to the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection to help improve the delivery of nutritious meals to schoolchildren nationwide.
