THE Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has paid a working visit to the Legon Centre for International Affairs and Diplomacy (LECIAD) of the University of Ghana to strengthen cooperation between the two institutions.
The visit took place on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, and focused on reviewing the relationship between the Ministry and LECIAD and exploring ways to deepen their partnership.
In a statement after the visit, Mr Ablakwa said the Ministry was proud of LECIAD, which was established in 1989 as an initiative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
He said the Centre had played an important role in training many Ghanaian diplomats and international relations scholars and had developed into a centre of excellence.
“I have always considered LECIAD as the intellectual and research arm of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs,” he said.
According to the Minister, the visit provided an opportunity for the two institutions to review their existing relationship, strengthen collaboration and explore how academic research could support Ghana’s foreign policy and international engagements.
He cited areas in which Ghana was seeking to provide global leadership, including reparatory justice, peace and security, health sovereignty, reforms at the United Nations and efforts to reset the international financial system.
As part of efforts to strengthen the partnership, Mr Ablakwa announced the establishment of a special committee made up of senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and LECIAD.
He said the committee would make recommendations on the future strategic direction of the relationship between the two institutions.
The Minister thanked the Acting Director and faculty of LECIAD for their warm reception and the substantive discussions held during the visit.
