DR. BOAMAH Otokunor, Director of Agribusiness, conducted a comprehensive inspection of agricultural sites across the Afram Plains, Kwame Danso, and parts of the Northeast Region last weekend.

These visits are integral to the preparatory phase of the Youth Agricultural Estate Initiative, a flagship programme under the Feed Ghana Programme, aimed at commercializing the production of key food crops and generating thousands of employment opportunities for women and young people.

The Youth Agricultural Estate Initiative is a cornerstone of His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama’s Agriculture for Economic Transformation Agenda.

This agenda seeks to modernize and mechanize agriculture to drive accelerated economic development and import substitution. By focusing on youth engagement and commercial-scale farming, the initiative aspires to transform Ghana’s agricultural landscape into a vibrant, self-sustaining sector.

During his inspections, Dr. Otokunor assessed the readiness of the selected sites for the establishment of agricultural estates. He engaged with local stakeholders, including community leaders and prospective young farmers, to discuss the implementation strategies and expected outcomes of the initiative.

The Director emphasized the government’s commitment to providing the necessary infrastructure, training, and support services to ensure the success of the programme.

The Feed Ghana Programme, under which the Youth Agricultural Estate Initiative falls, is designed to enhance food security and reduce Ghana’s reliance on food imports.

By promoting the cultivation of staple crops and supporting value addition through agro-processing, the programme aims to create a robust agricultural value chain that benefits all stakeholders.

President Mahama’s vision for the agricultural sector includes the establishment of Farmer Service Centres in every district, providing farmers with access to modern equipment, quality seeds, and technical support.

These centers are expected to play a pivotal role in facilitating the objectives of the Youth Agricultural Estate Initiative by equipping young farmers with the tools and knowledge necessary for success.

The government’s proactive approach to revitalizing agriculture through youth engagement and modernization reflects its broader commitment to economic transformation.

As preparations for the Youth Agricultural Estate Initiative progress, stakeholders remain optimistic about the potential of this programme to reshape Ghana’s agricultural sector and contribute significantly to national development goals.
