The Legislator for the people of La Dade-Kotopon Constituency in Accra Region, Hon. Rita Naa Odoley Sowah has established skills development centre dubbed “Nye Awo Kpakpa Skills Training Centre” to train the youth of the area.
The Centre is to train youth in various skills development areas such as cosmetology, dress making, pastries including cake, bread amongst many other skills. The idea is to ensure the youth in La are self-employed.
In an interview with National Tymes, the Hon. Member of Parliament, MP was frank when she said “is better to teach your people/followers how to fish rather than giving them fish”; this will help them to become self-employed and responsibe people in future and not being dependents on others or their families, she added.
The Member of Parliament for La pointed out that she made a pledge to the people of her constituency that she would train the youth with something that will elevate them from poverty; and what she started was one of her initiatives.
First of it kind in La, Hon. Naa Odoley Sowah indicated that the training is free, and she officially informed all the family houses across the constituency for them to enrol their unemployed youth irrespective of their educational levels but only if they want a skill to work with.
She also advertised the school on LATENU, a La Community Based Radio station for any interested person to enrol for free despite one’s political affiliation. Hon Rita Naa Odoley Sowah explained to the overwhelming participants at the launch that she wants them to benefit hugely from the training so she could be happy.
To this effect, she has provided to the experienced teacher and trainers the necessary equipments the would be needed to train the participants. At the event, some of these participants are middle-age people who are willing to learn a skill to work with.
The Hon Member of Parliament, MP, for La Dade-Kotopon Constituency has the youth and people with disabilities at heart prior to her appointment as the first female Municipal Chief Executive, MCE for La Dade-Kotopon Municipality.
And during her tenure as the MCE, Hon Rita Naa Odoley Sowah tries to support the youth and women groups with tokens to go into petty trade to end a living. She also supports the disabilities in her small way and paying of fees for others at the tertiary level.
On their parts, the former NDC MP for La Dade-Kotopon, Nii Amasan Namo-Ale and the NDC Chairman for the area, Alhaji Obodai urged the participants to take the training seriously and make good use of it when they passed out successfully.
They discouraged them from dropping out especially looking at the short duration they will spend before they passed out with participatory certificates that will qualify them to work where their services might be needed.
According to the administrator, Mrs. Grace Intsiaba-Aryee they have over hundred people who came to register for one course or the other.
She hinted that they would train them for 5 weeks and they would attach them to some companies for them to gain needed experience that could them to places.
The participants were taken through certain orientation for them to conduct themselves well throughout so they could learn their various cources very well.
Some of the participants who spoke with this portal were impressed the MP has their way with this noble idea make them self-employed.
