THE MEMBER of Parliament for Afadjato South, Hon. Frank Afriyie, has applauded the Mahama-led NDC government for prioritising youth empowerment and healthcare, saying the two sectors are key to building a healthier, skilled and productive population.
Speaking in Parliament during a debate to mark World Population Day 2026, the MP said Ghana’s growing youthful population must be equipped with the right skills and opportunities to contribute meaningfully to national development.
Hon. Afriyie praised the nationwide rollout of the Ejumawura Programme, describing it as a bold initiative aimed at helping young people develop their talents, acquire employable skills and create sustainable jobs.
He said the programme reflects the government’s determination to prepare the country’s youth to compete confidently in the global economy, adding that investing in young people today is the surest way to secure Ghana’s future growth and prosperity.
Turning to healthcare, the Afadjato South lawmaker stressed the need to protect pregnant women, nursing mothers and unborn children, whom he described as some of the country’s most vulnerable groups.

He commended the government for introducing interventions such as the Free Medical Care Programme, the Free Primary Care Programme, and the Mahama Care Initiative, saying the policies are expanding access to quality healthcare, especially for women and children.
According to him, these programmes are already making a positive difference in rural and underserved communities where access to quality healthcare has long been a challenge.
Hon. Afriyie said the interventions are helping to improve maternal and child healthcare while bringing much-needed medical services closer to people living in remote parts of the country.
He called for sustained investment in youth development and healthcare, stressing that a healthy, skilled and empowered population remains the foundation for Ghana’s sustainable development and long-term national progress.
