THE SOUTH Tongu District has officially taken custody of its allocation of vocational training equipment following a regional distribution ceremony led by the Volta Regional Minister, Hon. James Gunu.
The equipment, which includes tools for garment making and hairdressing, is now safely stored in the district and ready for distribution to selected youth beneficiaries under the government’s skills development programme. An official local distribution ceremony will be announced in due course.

Speaking after the ceremony, the district leadership outlined key measures that will guide the rollout of the programme in South Tongu.
Zero Tolerance for Misuse of Equipment:
In line with directives from the Volta Regional Minister, the district has declared a zero-tolerance policy on the diversion or sale of the equipment. The items are part of the NDC government’s manifesto promise to empower the youth under the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama.
Authorities warned that all equipment has been specially marked to prevent resale. Any individual found selling or misusing the tools will face prosecution and immediate removal from the programme.

Transparent and Inclusive Distribution:
The district has assured residents that the distribution process will be open and transparent. Chiefs, opinion leaders, the Member of Parliament, and the media will be invited to witness the distribution ceremony to ensure accountability.
This approach, officials say, will allow the community to play an active role in monitoring the programme and ensuring that the equipment reaches the right beneficiaries.
Fairness and Equal Opportunity
District officials reaffirmed their commitment to fairness in the selection of beneficiaries. The programme is expected to benefit youth across South Tongu without discrimination, as part of the government’s broader development agenda for the Volta Region.

Focus on Quality Training:
Mastercraft persons and trainers have been urged to create a supportive learning environment for apprentices. Authorities stressed that the success of the programme depends not only on the tools but also on quality training and commitment from both trainers and trainees.
With growing competition from artisans in neighbouring countries such as Togo, excellence in vocational training has become a necessity, officials noted.
More Opportunities Ahead
Youth who were not selected in the first phase have been encouraged to remain hopeful. National coordinators have announced plans to expand the programme to reach up to 100,000 young people nationwide beginning this February.
Those currently on the waiting list will be considered as the programme expands. District leaders say the goal is to transform South Tongu into a centre of skilled, self-reliant, and empowered youth.
