Story By: Samali Abdul Razak

RESIDENTS of Bontibor, a farming community in the Nkwanta South Municipality of the Oti Region, are appealing for swift government intervention following the collapse of a newly constructed bridge.

The bridge, which was meant to improve access and support economic activities, has deteriorated rapidly less than a year after completion, leaving the community isolated and struggling.

The area, known for its vibrant agricultural output including cocoa, yam, cassava, maize, and plantain, has been severely affected as farmers can no longer transport their produce to market, leading to mounting post-harvest losses.

“This bridge is a death trap,” said Eric Modorm, a local teacher. “It’s barely a year old and already crumbling. Cars can’t cross. Traders now carry goods on their heads, it’s frustrating and a waste of taxpayer money.”

Health workers also shared concerns, highlighting the difficulty of transporting patients for emergency care due to the inaccessible roads. The situation has sparked worry among residents who now fear for their livelihoods and safety, especially during the rainy season.

The community is calling on President John Dramani Mahama to come to their aid, reminding him of his earlier pledge not to abandon Bontibor. They hope that urgent repairs or a complete reconstruction of the bridge will be prioritized to restore access and support the local economy.
