IN A MAJOR boost to Ghana’s infrastructure, His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama has directed the immediate design and construction of the long-anticipated Ekye-Amanfrom to Adawso bridge over the Afram River, under his flagship “Big Push” infrastructure agenda.
President Mahama tasked the Minister for Roads and Highways, Governs Kwame Agbodza, to lead the project, which aims to unlock the economic potential of the Afram Plains and strengthen regional connectivity between the Eastern, Ashanti, and Oti Regions.
The project – which had previously stalled under successive governments – includes the construction of a 3-kilometer, two-lane bridge along with over 100 kilometers of supporting roadworks.
The bridge is seen as critical to facilitating agriculture, commerce and the planned establishment of a satellite campus of the University of Environment and Sustainable Development.
According to government sources, the bridge’s design will be localized to ensure cost-effectiveness and durability. The Roads Minister has expressed confidence that the project will be completed within President Mahama’s current tenure.
Project Scope Highlights:
● Bridge Construction:
A 3-kilometer, two-lane bridge across the Afram River, complete with service lanes, pavement layers, asphalt surfacing, a toll plaza and weight stations.
Road Rehabilitation:
- Upgrade of the Bunso-Adawso Road linking to the N6 highway.
- Rehabilitation of the Obuoho (Begoro)-Kwahu Tafo Road (58.7 km) and the Ekyi Amanfrom-Donkorkrom Road (101 km).
Project Components and Costing:
- Engineering Design: €10 million
- Substructure Construction: €103 million
- Superstructure Manufacturing and Installation: €72 million
- Toll and Weight Stations: €5 million
