The Ayawaso East Municipal Assembly has awarded a 71 year old widow, Madam Prisca Quarshie as the Ayawaso East Municipal Best Woman farmer for 2021.
Madam Quarshie has an oasis of vegetables, fruit trees and ornamental crops at Kusuntuline-Nima with the largest cocoa tree in the whole of Accra serving as a shade in her residence.
The 3rd Ayawaso East Municipal Farmers’ Day Anniversary also awarded six other farmers including a Senior High School teenager who uses social media to advertise his produce.
According to the Ayawaso East Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hajia Salma Adams Sani-Kuta the farmers’ day celebration every first Friday of December is to recognize the importance role farmers and fishers play to salvage the Ghanaian economy and ensure food security.
The theme for this year’s national event was “Planting for Food and Jobs (PFJ) – Consolidating Food Systems in Ghana”. She said this has achieved successes because it was aimed at transforming Ghana’s Agriculture by increasing food production to enhance food security and employment.
Hajia Sani-Kuta further indicated that PFJ was designed to enhance yields of farmers through access to subsidize improved seeds and fertilizers aiming at reducing post harvest losses.
The MCE, Hajia Sani-Kuta presented the Municipal overall best farmer award to a 37 year old Mudalib Saani of Ko-Oho in the Ayawaso East Municipality a certificate and a wooden cutlass for his outstanding performance.
Mudalib Saani received freezer, wheelbarrow with a number of items. All the other award recipients also took home wheelbarrows with assorted items. The teenager has a mountain bike in addition to his items.
In an interview with Nationaltymes.com, the MCE, Hajia Selma Adams Sani-Kuta, charged all young boys between the ages of 16 to 19 or above to replace their activities in the cafe (cybercafe) with any farming activities to raise money to learn any profitable trade.
On his part, the Municipal Agric Director, Charles Asem-Bansa stated in his welcome address that his outfit in the Assembly is to help formulat and implement agricultural policies and to advice the assembly on matters relating to agricultural development.
He stated that the agricultural development also promotes extension services to farmers and assist in developing animal health services infrastructure and to facilitate and encourage vaccination and immunisation of livestock and the control of animal diseases.
Other awardees include Abdul-Samadu, best livestock farmer; Shaibu Adamu, best crop farmer; Faisal Abdul-Nasir, 19, and a student of Labone Senior High School was the best youth farmer.
The Municipal best agricultural extension agent went to Theophilus Abassah, a worker of the Assembly’s agricultural development who is in charge of home gardening and mushroom project.
