IN AN emergency, knowing what to do can mean the difference between life and death. The Ghana Free Zones Authority (GFZA) has taken a practical step towards saving lives by equipping its staff with essential skills in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Basic Life Support.

The training, organised on Friday, October 9, 2026, formed part of activities marking Customer Service Week 2026, which was celebrated under the theme, “The Extra Mile.”
The session was facilitated by a team from the International Maritime Hospital (IMAH), led by Dr. Barbara Ayesha Karbo. It was highly interactive and practical, giving staff the opportunity to learn and practise essential techniques for responding quickly and effectively to medical emergencies at work, at home and in their communities.
Participants were taken through how to identify cardiac emergencies, perform CPR correctly, apply basic life-support techniques and assist victims while waiting for professional medical assistance to arrive.

The training was designed to improve staff preparedness and equip them with the confidence and practical knowledge needed to respond appropriately when lives are at risk.
The Chief Executive Officer of GFZA, Dr. Mary Awusi, commended the IMAH team for sharing its expertise and helping to build a workforce better prepared to handle medical emergencies.
She emphasised that life-saving skills are important not only in the workplace but also in homes and communities, where prompt action can make a critical difference.
Dr. Awusi urged staff to take the training seriously and apply the knowledge gained whenever necessary.

“At GFZA, going the extra mile means more than delivering excellent service. It also means promoting preparedness, compassion and a culture of care where every life matters,” she said.
The Authority said the initiative forms part of its broader commitment to staff welfare, workplace safety and the delivery of excellent customer service.
The training also highlights the importance of equipping employees with practical skills that go beyond their official duties and enable them to contribute to the safety and well-being of others.

For GFZA, Customer Service Week is therefore not just about improving service delivery to clients but also about building a caring, responsive and safety-conscious institution.
Sometimes, going the extra mile means being prepared to save a life.
