THE MINISTER for Food and Agriculture, Hon. Eric Opoku, has visited the Kpong Irrigation Project to check on renovation works and meet farmers and contractors.
The project covers over 4,000 hectares of land and supports about 2,500 smallholder farmers and 25 commercial farmers. When fully operational, it can create over 7,000 direct jobs and support more than 21,000 households.

However, work has slowed down due to funding challenges. During the visit, the Minister assured contractors that outstanding payments will be processed quickly so work can resume without delay.
He also met with farmers and directed the National Food Buffer Stock Company to buy excess rice produced at the scheme to prevent losses after harvest.
Hon. Opoku promised to provide excavators to help with land preparation and clear blocked canals. He also announced that access roads to the irrigation fields will be constructed to make transportation easier.

To further support farmers, the Minister revealed plans to establish a Farmer Service Centre in the area to provide inputs and extension services.
The Minister reiterated government’s commitment to revamping irrigation schemes nationwide to boost food production, create jobs, and ensure food security.
