THE MUNICIPAL Chief Executive (MCE) for Adenta in the Greater Accra Region, Hon. Ella Esinam Nongo, has intensified efforts to permanently eliminate the phenomenon of schools operating under trees by expanding classroom infrastructure across the municipality.

Within her first year in office, the MCE has spearheaded interventions to ensure that the situation does not recur, beginning with the Adenta Community Basic School, which drew national attention in 2021 when pupils and teachers were compelled to hold classes under trees due to inadequate classroom facilities.

Speaking to journalists in her office in late December, Hon. Nongo said the Assembly had commenced the second phase of classroom block construction at the school to secure long-term relief. “We do not wish to encounter these challenges again. That is why we are moving promptly to undertake phase two,” she stated.

Following her appointment in 2025, Hon. Nongo mobilised resources to complete the first phase of the project, which successfully accommodated all pupils previously affected. “I am pleased to say that the phase one infrastructure, completed last year, was spacious enough to absorb all the students who were earlier reported to be studying under trees. However, we are determined not to allow such a situation to reoccur, hence the commencement of phase two,” she added.

The phase two project, funded through the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF), has already begun, with a contractor on site. A sod-cutting ceremony was held in late December 2025. The new classroom block is expected to increase the school’s admission capacity.

“Our approach is long-term,” the MCE emphasized. Beyond the Adenta Community Basic School, the Assembly is undertaking several other educational infrastructure projects. These include the second phase of the Otanor Bethel Presbyterian School, following the completion of phase one in 2025, as well as the construction of two-storey, six-unit classroom blocks in selected communities.

Additionally, the Assembly is drilling 13 mechanized boreholes across all 12 electoral areas and constructing a two-unit kindergarten classroom block for the Ashiye Community Basic School. In the health sector, Hon. Nongo disclosed that a health centre constructed at Ashaley Botwe last year will be enclosed this year to make it fully operational.

She noted that the Assembly is also preparing for a series of sod-cutting ceremonies for upcoming development projects. The MCE further confirmed that plans to upgrade the main lorry station in Adenta into a modern transport terminal are progressing steadily.

“We have engaged all key stakeholders, especially the drivers who currently operate at the station, and the response has been very positive. They agree that the project will greatly benefit the municipality and have pledged their full support,” Hon Esinam Nongo said.
