Former Kwadaso MP, Dr. S.K. Nuamah, has delivered a scathing critique of his party’s current parliamentary bench, warning that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is rapidly losing its intellectual and performance edge in Ghana’s legislature.
Speaking on Oyerepa Radio, the outspoken former lawmaker lamented the declining quality of NPP representation, contrasting it sharply with what he described as the “rising depth and substance” of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Parliament.
“The depth and quality of debates and performance in Parliament from our side have declined,” Dr. Nuamah stated during the interview. He stresszed that the NPP’s human resource quality in Parliament has nosedived, contrasting it with what he described as the “upswing quality” of the NDC side.

The NDC secured 183 seats in the 9th Parliament, while the NPP holds 88 seats, with four seats occupied by independent MPs. This shift has granted the NDC a two-thirds majority, enabling them to drive legislative initiatives more effectively.
Dr. Nuamah’s comments came amid broader concerns about the high turnover rate in Ghana’s Parliament. The 9th Parliament has seen the inclusion of 115 first-term MPs, bringing fresh perspectives but also raising questions about experience and continuity.
Analysts have pointed to factors such as high campaign costs and internal party dynamics as contributing to the attrition of experienced legislators. The departure of seasoned MPs has led to concerns about the loss of institutional memory and the potential impact on legislative effectiveness.
Dr. Nuamah’s critique underscores the need for the NPP to address internal challenges and invest in building a robust and effective parliamentary team to enhance its legislative performance.
