IN A MAJOR policy shift, the government has removed all intermediaries from the premix fuel distribution chain, ensuring direct supply to fishermen.
Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Emelia Arthur, made the announcement on Thursday during a working visit to fishing communities in Kpando, Volta Region. She confirmed that positions such as premix regional, district and zonal coordinators have been abolished, with their appointments officially revoked.
“Please note that we no longer have positions such as premix regional, district or zonal coordinators. Their appointments have been revoked and the premix administrator is working on an arrangement for their exit. From now on, premix fuel will be transported directly from Accra to landing beach sites,” she stated.
This move fulfills President John Mahama’s 2024 campaign promise to eliminate intermediaries and streamline access to premix fuel.
According to the minister, the new system will help prevent artificial shortages allegedly created by intermediaries, which have long frustrated fishermen.
Emelia Arthur, who also serves as the Member of Parliament for Shama, assured fishing communities that this decision would enhance efficiency and transparency in the distribution process.
