The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has taken swipe at President Akufo-Addo and his New Patriotic Party, NPP government for mismanaging the economy which resulted in excruciating hardship and collapsing businesses.
The hardship is such that parents could no longer afford to buy groceries such as Kalypo which then candidate Akufo-Addo drunk for fame prior to the 2016 general elections.
According to the NDC, President Akufo Addo could not make live comfortable for Ghanaians as he did enjoyed under former President Mahama’s led NDC government.
National Communication Officer of NDC, Comrade Lawyer Sammy Gyamfi made the revelation at a press briefing in Accra over the week.
He opined that the NPP government reckless and insensitive management of the economy has led all goods increased astronomically and that, “even common Kalypo, which candidate Akufo-Addo drunk for fame in 2016 at a cool price of GHS0.50 is today being sold for a whopping GHS2.50″.
“…..how can parents afford to keep their kids happy when kalypo is now being sold at such a prohibitive price?”
The NDC however demanded of the NPP government take immediate steps to mitigate the effect on Ghanaians by repealing the obnoxious and counterproductive E-levy Act of 1.5% on MoMo and other electronic transactions.
And to also repeal the punitive COVID-19 levy of 1% on the VAT Flat Rate and the National Health Insurance Levy.
Comrade Gyamfi further tasked the Akufo-Addo led NPP government to immediately scrap the crippling fuel taxes like the Special Petroleum Tax, SPT that has outlived its usefulness, the needless Sanitation Levy (“BORLA” tax ), and the new Energy Sector Levy of 20 pesewas per liter of diesel and Petrol and 18 pesewas per kilogram of LPG.
The NDC said the NPP government should suspend the nine pesewas BOST margin and the Price Stabilization and Recovery Levy of 16 pesewas and 14 pesewas per liter of petrol and diesel respectively both of which are not being applied for their intended purposes.
“The last two puzzles for this NPP government to resolve if it is serious about bringing our economic back on track and restoring investor confidence is to get rid of the two villains who have been at the centre of wrecking this havoc on our economy,” he posited.
He further added that if the economy will be robust, President Akufo-Addo must sacked his cousin the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta from his position.
“The earlier President Akufo-Addo sacks his underperforming cousin, Ken Ofori-Atta, the better for the economy”, opined Comde Lawyer Gyamfi.
He also called on the President to remove the Vice-President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the head of the economic management team since he has no more economic knowledge to continue to lead the team.
