GHANA’S political communication landscape has changed significantly in recent years, with young voices taking a more active role in national discussions.

One of the personalities at the centre of this change is Lawyer Samuel Adu Gyamfi, popularly known as Sammy Gyamfi.

THE AUTHOR: M. AMIN LAMPTEY HUSSEIN.

From my years of observing him, I see a young man who is ambitious, hardworking, confident and gifted in communication. His political journey also shows how preparation and determination can open doors to national leadership.

Born in Sunyani on March 28, 1989, Sammy Gyamfi attended St. James Seminary Senior High School and later studied at KNUST.

He became involved in student leadership before pursuing legal education at the Ghana School of Law, Makola. He also participated in executive leadership programmes at the Harvard Kennedy School. His professional background includes working as a Public Relations Officer and aide to former Kumasi Mayor Kojo Bonsu.

The Communicator:
Sammy Gyamfi’s biggest public breakthrough came through his work with the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

He became the party’s National Communications Officer in November 2018 and was re-elected in 2022. In that role, he became one of the most recognisable voices of the party, appearing regularly in the media and defending its policies and political positions.

His approach has been direct, energetic and sometimes confrontational. While this has won him admiration from many supporters, it has also attracted criticism from political opponents.

But whether one agrees with him or not, it is difficult to ignore his influence on political communication in Ghana.

From Politics to Gold:
His appointment as Chief Executive Officer of GoldBod later gave him responsibility beyond party politics.
At GoldBod, he has been associated with reforms aimed at improving the management and trading of Ghana’s gold resources.

These include measures to strengthen domestic gold purchasing, improve traceability, formalise aspects of artisanal and small-scale mining and promote local value addition. The move towards local refining and stronger state participation in the gold trade has also generated public interest.

These reforms will ultimately have to be judged by their long-term results, but they have already placed GoldBod firmly at the centre of discussions about Ghana’s mineral economy.

A Lesson for Young Politicians
The public exchanges between Sammy Gyamfi and Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin also deserve attention.

Although they belong to opposing political traditions, their debates can provide useful lessons in political communication and democratic engagement.

The two personalities should, however, continue to place facts, evidence and national interest above political point-scoring. The media and the public must equally be careful not to misquote them or circulate statements without checking the facts.

In my assessment, Lawyer Sammy Gyamfi represents a new generation of Ghanaian political communicators who are not afraid to take their ideas to the public.

His confidence, communication skills, charisma and ability to connect with audiences have helped him build a strong political brand.

GOLDBOD CEO,  LAWYER SAMMY GYAMFI.

For young politicians, his journey is a reminder that political leadership is not only about occupying positions. It is also about developing the knowledge, communication skills, discipline and courage needed to make an impact.

Sammy Gyamfi’s story, therefore, remains one worth watching as Ghana’s political and public leadership continues to evolve.
