LAWYER Samuel Adu Gyamfi, popularly known as Sammy Gyamfi, has emerged as one of the young political figures making a strong impact on Ghana’s political communication and public discourse.

Over the years, his political activities, communication skills and leadership style have attracted both praise and criticism. However, a closer look at his career shows a young man who is ambitious, determined and committed to his goals.

AUTHOR: MOHAMMED AMIN LAMPTEY, COMM. EXPERT.

Sammy Gyamfi was born on March 28, 1989, in Sunyani. He is a lawyer, politician and currently serves as the National Communications Officer of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) and Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod).

He attended St. James Seminary Senior High School before proceeding to the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), where he also served as a student leader. He later trained as a lawyer at the Ghana School of Law and pursued executive leadership programmes at the Harvard Kennedy School.

Before rising to national prominence, he worked as a Public Relations Officer and aide to the former Mayor of Kumasi, Kojo Bonsu, who later became Ghana’s Ambassador to China.

A Strong Voice for the NDC:
Sammy Gyamfi was elected National Communications Officer of the NDC in November 2018 and was re-elected in 2022.

In that position, he played a major role in shaping the party’s media strategy, public messaging and political communication. His supporters credit his strong communication skills and strategic approach with helping the NDC strengthen its message ahead of the 2024 general election.

GoldBod Leadership:
Following his political communication role, Sammy Gyamfi was appointed Chief Executive Officer of the newly established Ghana Gold Board.

Since his appointment, he has been associated with a number of reforms in the gold and minerals sector, including efforts to strengthen domestic gold trading, improve traceability and increase the state’s participation in the artisanal and small-scale mining sector.

Other initiatives attributed to his administration include the establishment of district gold-buying centres, digital traceability measures, efforts to promote local refining and policies aimed at retaining more value from Ghana’s gold within the country.

These developments have made GoldBod and its leadership a subject of considerable public discussion.

A New Era of Political Debate:
The intellectual exchanges between Sammy Gyamfi and Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin have also become a notable feature of Ghana’s political discourse.

While the two politicians often represent opposing political positions, their public engagements provide an opportunity for citizens to listen to different arguments on national issues.

Both sides, however, must approach such debates with diplomacy, critical thinking and respect for facts. Political communicators also have a responsibility to avoid misquoting their opponents or presenting statements out of context.

As observers, Ghanaians should listen with open minds and make informed judgments rather than relying on political propaganda or misinformation.

In my view, Sammy Gyamfi and Alexander Afenyo-Markin are among the prominent voices currently contributing to Ghana’s mainstream political debate. Their ability to engage one another intellectually can help raise the standard of political communication in the country.

Young politicians can learn from this form of engagement by combining confidence with facts, discipline and respect for opposing views.

For critics of Sammy Gyamfi, there is also the need to look beyond his political style and examine his communication ability, confidence, charisma and leadership qualities.

Whatever one’s political position may be, Sammy Gyamfi’s rise in Ghanaian public life demonstrates the growing influence of young people in shaping the country’s political conversation.
