THE ONGOING conflict in the Nkwanta South Municipality of the Oti Region is forcing many learners to stay away from school, raising fresh concerns about the future of education in the area.

The Principal of the Nkwanta Community Vocational Training Institute, Mr. Bernard Portakey, says fear and insecurity have become major obstacles to learning, especially for students who travel long distances to attend classes.
Speaking in an interview, Mr. Portakey said the continuing violence has led to a sharp drop in student attendance, as many parents are unwilling to allow their children to travel through areas they consider unsafe.
According to him, the situation is affecting academic work and denying many young people the opportunity to acquire skills that could improve their lives.
He explained that the institute was established to provide technical and vocational education that equips learners with practical skills for employment and self-reliance.
Mr. Portakey said vocational training gives young people the opportunity to start their own businesses, earn a living, and contribute to the development of their communities.
Despite the security challenges, he noted that the institute remains committed to training students.
He disclosed that the first batch of trainees have successfully completed their programmes and are currently receiving certificates after acquiring practical skills in various trades.

He expressed hope that the graduates would use the knowledge they have gained to secure jobs or establish their own businesses and become productive members of society. Mr. Portakey, however, stressed that the worsening security situation could undermine the progress being made if urgent steps are not taken to restore peace.
He appealed to the government, security agencies, traditional authorities, and all stakeholders to work together to end the conflict and guarantee the safety of learners and teachers. He said every child deserves the opportunity to go to school without fear, warning that prolonged insecurity could have lasting effects on the education and future of many young people in Nkwanta South.
