PREAMBLE

LAZINESS or neglect in reading can limit intellectual growth, reduce vocabulary, and weaken critical thinking skills. Without regular reading, people may struggle with communication, become vulnerable to misinformation, misconceptions, disinformation, rumours, and fake news, and miss many educational and professional opportunities.

From the Islamic perspective, reading is not merely a leisure activity; it is a fundamental act of worship and a religious obligation. It is the primary means of acquiring knowledge, helping Muslims understand their faith, develop good character, and strengthen their relationship with Allah and the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

The very first word revealed in the Holy Quran to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was “Iqra”, meaning “Read” or “Recite.” This powerful command established reading as the foundation of revelation and intellectual growth.
Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) also said that “Seeking knowledge is an obligation upon every Muslim.” This includes both religious knowledge needed for spiritual growth and worldly knowledge that benefits society.

The Quran repeatedly encourages people to observe, reflect, and think deeply about the signs of Allah in the universe. Reading and reflection go hand in hand in awakening the mind and protecting people from ignorance.

PROPHET MUHAMMAD’S (PBUH) ENCOUNTER WITH ANGEL GABRIEL (JIBRIL)

Prophet Muhammad’s first encounter with Angel Gabriel occurred in 610 CE at Mount Hira. At the age of 40, he often spent days in prayer, contemplation, and self-reflection inside the Cave of Hira near Makkah.
During one of these periods of reflection, Angel Gabriel appeared and commanded him to “Read” (Iqra).

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) replied that he could not read. The angel embraced him tightly and repeated the command three times.
After the third time, Angel Gabriel revealed the first verses of the Holy Quran (Surah Al-Alaq 96:1-5):
“Read in the name of your Lord who created. Created man from a clinging substance. Read, and your Lord is the Most Generous, who taught by the pen, taught man that which he knew not.”

This historic event marked the beginning of the Prophet’s mission and highlighted the importance of reading and knowledge in Islam.
Reading and contemplation help awaken the mind and guard against ignorance. Through reading, people gain knowledge of Allah’s commands, learn about the lives of past prophets, and acquire useful knowledge that contributes to the development of humanity.

THE VALUE AND BENEFITS OF READING

Reading is one of the most valuable and affordable habits anyone can develop. It sharpens the mind, strengthens mental resilience, and helps people cope better with stress and life’s challenges.

Reading improves concentration, increases knowledge, enhances vocabulary, and develops empathy. Whether you read for pleasure, education, or personal development, dedicating just a few minutes each day to reading can provide lasting mental and emotional benefits.
The benefits of reading extend throughout every stage of life, positively affecting both the mind and the body.

READING AS MENTAL EXERCISE

Reading is like exercise for the brain. It activates complex mental processes that strengthen memory, improve analytical thinking, and support better decision-making.

Research suggests that mentally stimulating activities such as reading may slow memory decline and reduce the risk of certain age-related cognitive disorders. Regular reading keeps the brain active and healthy.
Studies have also shown that people who read regularly may enjoy better overall health and emotional well-being. Reading can help reduce stress, improve mental health, and contribute to a longer and healthier life.

Becoming deeply engaged in a good book can lower heart rate, reduce muscle tension, and relieve stress. Some studies indicate that reading reduces stress levels faster than listening to music or taking a walk.

READING INCREASES EMPATHY

Reading, especially literary fiction, allows readers to experience the lives, cultures, and emotions of different people. This helps build emotional intelligence and improves the ability to understand and relate to others.

By seeing the world through different perspectives, readers become more compassionate, tolerant, and understanding.

READING IMPROVES SLEEP QUALITY

Replacing digital screens with a physical book before bedtime can help calm the nervous system and prepare the brain for sleep.

Reading before bed encourages relaxation and often leads to better sleep quality. A good reading habit can therefore contribute to both physical and mental well-being.

READING IMPROVES CAREER AND PERSONAL GROWTH

Reading is a powerful tool for personal and professional development. It exposes individuals to new ideas, skills, and knowledge that can enhance career opportunities and personal success.

Continuous reading helps people stay informed, adapt to change, and remain competitive in today’s fast-changing world.

READING VASTLY IMPROVES VOCABULARY

Reading regularly exposes people to new words and expressions, naturally expanding their vocabulary and improving communication skills.
It also introduces readers to different writing styles and ways of expressing ideas. As a result, readers become better writers, speakers, and communicators.

MOHAMMED AMIN LAMPTEY HUSSEIN.

Non-fiction and educational books provide a continuous and accessible way to learn new subjects, increase general knowledge, and improve conversation skills.

IN CONCLUSION

Developing an effective reading habit requires consistency, commitment, and a desire to learn. People should avoid becoming mere “headline readers” and instead cultivate the habit of reading deeply and thoughtfully.

Reading is one of the most powerful tools for personal growth. It strengthens the brain, improves focus, expands vocabulary, reduces stress, and enhances critical thinking skills.
By immersing ourselves in books and diverse sources of knowledge, we build empathy, gain wisdom, and acquire lifelong knowledge that contributes to both personal and professional success.

In a world filled with misinformation and distractions, reading remains one of the surest paths to enlightenment, empowerment, and lifelong learning.

Thank you for reading.
