The decision by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to begin a new membership registration exercise on February 10, 2026, ahead of branch executive elections, is raising growing concern among party members, according to political activist and NDC member Nii Ayitey Armah, Krowor.

He said that while expanding party membership is necessary, the timing of the registration exercise has raised legitimate questions, especially as constituency elections and parliamentary primaries draw closer.

Speaking in a statement issued in Accra, Nii Armah expressed concern that some party executives and sitting Members of Parliament could influence the registration process to protect their positions.

He explained that this could involve packing branches with loyal supporters or weakening existing branch executives perceived as rivals.
Such actions, whether actual or perceived, he noted, threaten internal democracy and undermine trust within the party.

A process intended to strengthen the NDC, he warned, could instead become a source of division and suspicion. According to him, long-standing branch members have sustained the party through difficult times, and allowing branch elections to be decided by these committed members ensures fairness, continuity, and legitimacy.

Nii Armah added that introducing new members before branch elections, no matter how well-intentioned, creates room for abuse and could sideline dedicated grassroots workers. To promote unity, transparency, and party cohesion, he urged the NEC to reconsider the sequence of activities.

FIIFI FIAVI KWETEY, NDC GENERAL SECRETARY.

He proposed that branch executive elections be conducted first using the existing register, followed by a well-monitored membership registration exercise, and then constituency elections and parliamentary primaries.

He concluded that the message from the grassroots is clear: protect the branch, respect loyal members, and get the process right.
