PRESIDENT John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to supply two million desks to basic schools across Ghana by the end of 2026.
The initiative is aimed at improving learning conditions for pupils, many of whom currently study without proper furniture. According to the President, poor infrastructure at the basic school level has remained a major problem over the years.
Speaking to the Ghanaian community in Zambia during his three-day state visit, President Mahama said about 1.2 million children in Ghana attend school without desks.
He explained that past attention had largely been placed on senior high schools due to the Free SHS policy, leaving many basic schools without enough desks and textbooks. As a result, some pupils are forced to sit on the floor during lessons.
“The basic school level has been neglected. Many schools lack textbooks and furniture, and you often find children sitting on the floor,” he said.

President Mahama assured Ghanaians that his government is determined to fix the problem. He said the planned distribution of desks will help ensure that no child is forced to study on the floor in the coming years.
The announcement has been welcomed by education stakeholders. Kofi Asare, Executive Director of Africa Education Watch, praised the move and urged the government to act quickly.
“This is long overdue. We hope the desks will be delivered as soon as possible,” he said.
