THE MEMBER of Parliament for Okaikwei North, Hon. Theresa Lardi Awuni, has donated relief items to families affected by the recent floods in her constituency and appealed to Ghanaians not to politicise the disaster.

HON. THERESA LARDI AWUNI,  MP.

Presenting the items, the MP conveyed a message of sympathy from President John Dramani Mahama, saying the President was deeply saddened by the loss of lives and destruction caused by the floods.

“The President asked me to tell you that he shares in your pain. He is saddened by the flooding that has claimed lives and destroyed properties. This disaster did not affect only Alogboshie but many parts of the country,” she said.

Hon. Lardi stressed that natural disasters do not discriminate based on political affiliation and urged the public to put humanity above politics.
“Floodwaters do not ask whether you belong to the NDC or the NPP before entering your home. This is not the time for politics. We must stand together and support those who have been affected,” she said.

Describing Alogboshie as one of the worst-hit communities, the MP recounted emotional moments during her visit to affected families.

“I met a mother who lost her two children in the flood. One has been found, while the search continues for the other. Another man lost his wife and three children. Some bodies have been recovered, while others are still missing. It is a very painful situation,” she said.

She encouraged survivors who escaped with their lives to remain hopeful despite losing their belongings. “If you are alive today and only lost your property, thank God for your life. Property can be replaced, but no amount of money can bring back a life,” she advised.

Hon. Lardi noted that flooding has become an increasing challenge in Ghana and across the world due to climate change. She cited recent floods in Takoradi, Obuasi and parts of the Central Region, as well as similar incidents in other countries.

She urged residents to avoid building or living in flood-prone areas and to support efforts aimed at preventing future disasters.

The relief items are expected to provide temporary support to affected families as they begin rebuilding their lives after the devastating floods.
