PRESIDENT John Dramani Mahama has officially launched the Ho Oxygen City Project, a major urban development initiative aimed at transforming the Volta Region into a modern and economically vibrant hub.

The launch, held over the week in Ho, was attended by the Member of the Council of State for the Volta Region, Gabriel Kwamigah Atokple, and the Minister for Works and Housing and his deputy.
Other dignitaries present included the Volta Regional Minister, the Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), sector ministers, and Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs).
Speaking at the event, President Mahama described the Ho Oxygen City Project as a practical step toward realizing the long-standing vision of Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, for well-planned, inclusive, and self-sustaining communities. He compared the project to Community 27 in Tema, which was designed as a model residential and urban development.

The President said the project reflects a renewed national commitment to orderly spatial planning, decentralisation, and regional economic transformation. He emphasized that such developments are critical to reducing pressure on major cities while creating opportunities in the regions.
The Ho Oxygen City Project will cover about 1,860 acres of land and is being developed through a strong public-private partnership led by TDC Ghana Limited. This approach, according to project leaders, will ensure sustainability, efficiency, and long-term value for residents and investors.
When completed, Ho Oxygen City is expected to feature modern infrastructure and environmentally friendly designs. Planned facilities include a commercial and business street, affordable two-bedroom and three-bedroom apartments, a four-star hotel, a world-class specialised hospital, a food and entertainment arena, basic and senior high schools, markets, a shopping mall, a golf course, and additional state housing supported by expanded public infrastructure.

Supporters of the project say it aligns with Ghana’s development goals and global efforts to build sustainable cities. They have called on local and international partners to support the initiative, which aims to contribute to Sustainable Development Goal 11 — making cities inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable.
The launch was welcomed as a major milestone for the Volta Region, with local leaders expressing gratitude to President Mahama for prioritizing the region’s development.
