Story By: Emmanuel Anyigba

GHANAIAN entrepreneur and member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Edith Dzigbordi Baku, has declared her intention to contest for the presidency, saying the country needs a bold and honest woman to lead it.

According to Ms. Baku, Ghana needs fresh leadership that will tackle corruption, reduce poverty and unemployment, and move the country from promises to practical development.

In a strongly worded statement, she expressed concern about what she described as the failure of successive political leaders to deliver on their campaign promises.

“Many Ghanaian leaders today keep making big promises, but don’t follow through. They say things will get better, but after the elections, nothing changes,” she said.

Ms. Baku further criticised what she described as the use of Ghana’s past achievements to justify the performance of some current leaders while ordinary citizens continue to struggle.

“Most of these leaders were born with silver spoons in their mouths and do not understand the struggles that the ordinary Ghanaian goes through,” she stated.

She alleged that some public officials misuse state resources meant for national development, arguing that such resources belong to the people and must be used for their benefit.
“Our leaders live in luxury while the ordinary Ghanaian struggles with poor health care, poverty and unemployment. It is wrong and unfair,” she added.

Ms. Baku believes the time has come for a woman to take up the highest office of the land and provide what she described as firm, honest and people-centred leadership.

“Ghana needs a bold woman as president; one who is not afraid to speak the truth and take action. A woman who will stand for honesty, fight corruption and work hard to clean up the system,” she said.

She added: “Ghana deserves a leader who puts the people first, not her pocket. A woman who will bring discipline, fairness and real development. It is time for fresh leadership, new ideas and serious change. Ghana needs a mother of the nation who will clean the country thoroughly.”

The businesswoman said her decision to enter the political space was not motivated by a desire for power, but by a desire to contribute to Ghana’s development.

“I am stepping forward not because I want power but because I want change. I want to see a country where leaders serve and take action, not just make mere promises,” she said. “We are tired of watching our leaders make empty promises, steal from the people and leave our country behind,” she added.

Ms. Baku also pledged to promote equality before the law if given the opportunity to lead the country. She said no person, regardless of position, should be above the law.

“For too long, we have watched powerful people break the law and walk away freely, while ordinary citizens suffer for small mistakes. This must stop,” she stated.

On employment, Ms. Baku proposed changes to the labour system, including a system where workers could be rewarded based on the hours they work rather than relying only on fixed monthly salaries.

“If Ghanaians give me the chance, I will introduce policies that reward hard work. I believe it is time for a woman to rise and lead our motherland. I am that woman,” she declared.

Her declaration adds her voice to the growing conversation about the kind of leadership Ghanaians want ahead of the country’s next political cycle.
