MORE than 30 unemployed young women in Ayawaso East are taking part in a free six-week skills training programme to help them become independent and stop relying on others for money.
In an interview with Nationaltymes.com, Fati Moro, one of the trainees, said learning a skill can change a person’s life. “If you don’t work and keep asking people for money, they will get tired of you,” she said. “But when you have a skill, people will come to you for services. You can earn your own income.”
She thanked the Ayawaso East NDC Women’s Organiser, Hajia Rukaiya Adams for bringing to them such an opportunity to empower for free.
She encouraged the other trainees to take the programme seriously.
“Some people spend years and a lot of money to learn a skill. We are getting this training for free in just six weeks. We must not waste the chance,” she said.

The women are being trained in various hairstyling and make-up. They have been given free tools such as scissors, combs, and wigs to help them practice. Fati also called on other young women who are not working to join similar programmes.
“Stop depending on people for survival. If I learn this well, I can even teach others,” she added. The lead trainer, Lydia Fawuzia Salisu, said the short training period is a challenge, so she is focusing on teaching cornrows first.
“Cornrows can take up to two years to master,” she explained. “I want them to learn it well before we move to other things. I don’t want them to leave here without proper skills.” She advised the trainees to stay committed and make the most of the opportunity.

The programme was organized and sponsored by the Ayawaso East NDC Women’s Organizer, Hajia Rukaiya Adams. She said the goal is to support young women, especially school dropouts and young mothers, to earn a living.
“Some of these women have children but no income,” she said. “With this training, they can work, earn money, and take care of their families without depending on others.”
