WITH the March 3, 2026 by-election drawing near, political activity is intensifying in the Ayawaso East Constituency as the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) step up their campaigns.1
The discussion has recently turned to the issue of indigeneity — a direction the NDC and its supporters strongly oppose. Executives from Akwatia aligned with the NDC have rejected what they described as attempts to politicise identity, stressing that the election should focus on competence, experience and development, not place of birth.

The executives, together with party members from neighbouring constituencies, have declared their full support for Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed. They argued that although he was born in Akwatia, he resides in the Ayawaso area where he was raised and has long-standing personal and social ties to the constituency, making him well positioned to serve its people.
They described Baba Jamal as a lawyer in good standing and a former Member of Parliament for Akwatia Constituency, where they say he served with distinction. According to the executives, he played a key role in mentoring and supporting many young people, some of whom now serve in the country’s security services, while others work as medical doctors and professionals in Akwatia and surrounding communities.

The delegation, led by their constituency chairman B.B. and supported by District Chief Executive Hon. Umar Ahmed Tutu and Akwatia MP Lawyer Bernard Bediako Baidoo, explained that Baba Jamal’s decision to contest the Ayawaso East seat on the ticket of the NDC is rooted in his long association with the area and his desire to contribute further to national development.
MP Baidoo stated that Lawyer Baba Jamal could have chosen to remain in his position as Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, but instead decided to step forward to serve the people of Ayawaso East. He said the onus now lies on the constituents to give him strong support at the polls to strengthen his mandate in Parliament.

They expressed confidence that his experience in Parliament would give him an advantage in advancing the needs of the area. Lawyer Baidoo also questioned how an opposition or independent MP would be able to secure major development projects for the constituency, noting that even Members of Parliament from ruling parties sometimes face challenges in attracting resources.
He added that Baba Jamal’s previous parliamentary experience would enable him to navigate procedures effectively and engage leadership for the benefit of the constituency. The NDC executives further challenged the NPP’s development record, arguing that if the party had concrete plans for Ayawaso East, they would have been evident during its eight (8) years in government.

They noted that visible developments in the constituency — including the construction and expansion of school blocks, support for Islamic teachers, and the establishment of Islamic Education Units — were undertaken under previous NDC administrations.
As the by-election approaches, residents of Ayawaso East are expected to carefully assess the campaign messages and decide who they believe can best represent their interests and deliver meaningful development.
In conclusion, the Akwatia NDC delegation and Lawyer Baidoo donated T – Shirts and a set of jessey to the Nima East NDC Ward as their token to support the campaign in the area.
