THE REVIVAL of Ghana’s struggling railway sector took center stage at the latest German Embassy – JoyNews Climate Talks, where experts and traditional leaders emphasized the urgent need to restore the country’s rail network for economic and environmental benefits.
The forum brought together key voices, including Nana Kobina Nketsia V, Paramount Chief of Essikado; Prof. Kwasi Adarkwa, Transport Planning Expert and former KNUST Vice-Chancellor; and Western Regional Minister, Joseph Nelson.

They all agreed that rail transport is critical for Ghana’s climate goals, economic growth, and job creation.
Speakers highlighted how an efficient rail system reduces greenhouse gas emissions, supports the bulk movement of goods such as cocoa, bauxite, and manganese, and connects remote communities to commercial hubs.
This renewed push comes amid sharp criticism of the NPP government, led by Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, for what critics call a collapse of the railway sector.

According to observers, despite creating a Railways Ministry, the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government failed to build on foundations laid under the then John Mahama-led NDC administration.
Under the then former Ministry of Transport and Aviation, led by the late Aku Attivor and her deputy Joyce Bawa Mogtari, the Tema to Mpakadan railway project was initiated in 2016.
Today, critics claim that major lines like Accra to Kumasi via Adjen Kotoku have deteriorated or disappeared entirely, with no visible efforts at restoration under the watch of the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia administration.

They accuse the NPP of prioritizing personal gain over infrastructure development.
As Ghana aims to green its transport system and meet climate targets, many believe that restoring and expanding the railway sector must be a national priority — not just for the environment, but for sustainable economic development.
