THE NATIONAL Identification Authority (NIA) has responded to recent concerns raised by Mr. John Awuah regarding alleged instances of Ghana Cards being issued to non-Ghanaians.
In a statement issued by the Authority, the NIA assured the public that the matter is being taken seriously and that investigations are already underway.

The Authority warned that any staff or individual found to have engaged in wrongdoing will face the full regourse of the law. “Just last week, a Nigerian national was convicted and sentenced for attempting to fraudulently acquire the Ghana Card. Thirteen others are currently facing prosecution for similar offences,” the statement said.
The NIA highlighted its ongoing collaboration with security agencies to protect the integrity of Ghana’s identity system.
Importantly, the Authority emphasized that Ghanaian citizenship is determined by legal criteria—not by one’s language, accent, or physical appearance. “The Ghana Card is issued based on the requirements outlined in law, not assumptions,” the statement noted.

The public has been encouraged to report any suspected cases of fraud through the NIA’s official email (info@nia.gov.gh) or WhatsApp hotline (0549889525).
The NIA’s Corporate Affairs Department is expected to brief the media in the coming days on measures being taken to prevent and address such illegal activities.
“We call on all Ghanaians to support efforts to preserve the integrity of the Ghana Card,” the statement concluded.
