THE HIGH Commissioner-designate to the United Kingdom, Madam Zita Benson, has described recent economic decisions by the John Mahama-led NDC administration as key steps to relieve Ghanaians of persistent economic burdens.
Burdens deliberately imposed on the people of Ghana by the Nana Akufo-Addo/Bawumia-led NPP government in the last 8 years.

Speaking in an interview with Nationaltymes.com after the 2025 Mid-Year Budget Review, Madam Zita noted that while pricing in Ghana is legally expected in cedis, the over-reliance on imports has led many businesses, especially in real estate—to peg their prices to the US dollar.
“Even though payment is made in cedis as per Bank of Ghana regulations, pricing remains dollar-linked. This happens because the cedi’s value fluctuations affect price stability. For example, airfares recently dropped because the cedi appreciated against the dollar,” she explained.
Touching on the Finance Minister’s announcement to cancel the COVID-19 Levy, Madam Zita said the move was long overdue. “It’s unconscionable that five years after COVID-19, Ghanaians are still paying taxes introduced during the pandemic. In other countries, citizens were supported. Here, we are still taxed.”

She emphasized that with the levy scrapped, both private businesses and government agencies like the ports must immediately stop collecting it. “This will be a huge relief for taxpayers,” she said.
Madam Zita Benson also noted that the NDC government, since taking office in January, has canceled several taxes, including the E-Levy, emissions tax, and betting tax—moves she believes reflect a clear commitment to easing the burden on ordinary Ghanaians.
