National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has reignited national calls for deeper historical reflection and recognition of the role played by revolutionary forces in shaping Ghana’s democratic future.
Speaking at the 19th Anniversary of the United Cadres’ Revolutionary Forces, held under the theme “Resetting Ghana: Reflecting On June 19”, the Chairman emphasized that Ghana’s democratic gains are rooted in sacrifices made during the revolutionary era. He urged the nation not to forget these sacrifices, especially those of Cadres who laid the foundation for the Fourth Republic.
Highlighting the significance of June in the NDC’s history, Mr. Nketia proposed that the party should officially recognize the entire month as “NDC Month”. He cited key dates such as June 4, which marks the uprising that ushered in political change; June 19, the date of the uprising led by revolutionary forces; and June 22, the birthday of party founder, Jerry John Rawlings. These, he said, must be honoured collectively as part of the party’s foundational heritage.
“I believe in history, because if you don’t learn from your past, you’re bound to repeat its mistakes,” he noted. He described the commemoration as not merely nostalgic but an occasion to inspire patriotism, deepen democratic consciousness, and challenge the youth to emulate the selfless spirit of the revolutionary Cadres.
Mr. Nketia acknowledged that while the United Cadres’ Front is widely considered a wing of the NDC, since the party emerged from their struggles, there is still no conclusive decision on whether young Cadres should be incorporated into the party’s youth wing. He urged the party to confront this issue to remain true to its origins.

He also called for the revival of the Heroes and Heroines Fund to support aged Cadres and the families of those who sacrificed for Ghana’s progress. “These are people who put the nation first. They deserve more than recognition, they deserve tangible support,” he stressed.
Chairman General concluded by reminding all present that being a Cadre is not a title, but a value system rooted in patriotism, service, and the willingness to fight for justice — even at great personal cost.
The event, attended by party loyalists, Cadres, and youth representatives, served as a renewed call to uphold the NDC’s revolutionary values and protect the soul of Ghana’s democracy.
