THE YOUTH Employment Agency (YEA), in collaboration with the German Development Cooperation (GIZ) and other partners, has launched the “Make Fashion Inclusive” programme at Kumasi, in theAshantiRegion.
This initiative aims to empower Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) by providing them with skills training and economic opportunities in the fashion industry.
Under the programme, 100 PWDs—at least half of whom are women—will receive hands-on training in fashion design and dressmaking. The initiative includes the establishment of a Skills and Fashion Hub, equipped with modern electric sewing machines and other resources.

This is expected to serve as both a training center and a garment production facility. This hub will enable trainees to continue working, creating, and earning a sustainable income after completing their training.
YEA’s Chief Executive Officer, Kofi Baah Agyepong, emphasized the agency’s commitment to supporting PWDs, noting the establishment of Disability Desks in all 266 YEA offices across Ghana and the recruitment of 282 PWDs as District Disability Officers.

The programme also extends support to existing fashion entrepreneurs and start-ups, offering training in business development, financial literacy, and digital skills to enhance their competitiveness in Ghana’s growing fashion sector.
Wilhelm Hugo, Head of Programme for GIZ’s Special Initiative “Decent Work for a Just Transition,” expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, stating, “We want to create jobs for all persons, for all citizens,” highlighting the project’s potential to foster inclusive economic development and sustainable growth.

The “Make Fashion Inclusive” programme represents a significant step towards empowering PWDs in Ghana, providing them with opportunities for economic inclusion and a chance to reach their full potential.
