THE ALLIANCE for Social Equity and Public Accountability (ASEPA) has formally petitioned President John Dramani Mahama to trigger constitutional proceedings for the removal of Auditor General Johnson Akuamoah Asiedu.
The petition, filed at Jubilee House in Accra, accuses the Auditor General of high crimes, abuse of office and constitutional violations. ASEPA cites four key allegations against Mr. Asiedu, including:
- Defying Supreme Court directives, which constitutes high crime under Article 2(4) of the 1992 Constitution.
- Colluding with the Audit Service Board to usurp parliamentary powers in violation of Article 187(15).
- Unlawfully retaining public funds, breaching Section 17(2) of the Audit Service Act.
- Abuse of discretionary powers and cover-ups, violating Article 296 of the Constitution.
ASEPA argues that the removal process for the Auditor General follows the same constitutional framework as that of the Chief Justice under Article 146, as referenced in Article 187(13).
The petition, signed by ASEPA’s Executive Director, Mensah Thompson, marks the first step in what could become a significant legal and political battle over accountability in Ghana’s public institutions.
