Police officers are hiding behind “we’re doing our work” and deliberately embarrassing identifiable dignitaries.
At the main gate of the Accra Sports Stadium to the VIP stand, a police officer by name Otoo stopped the Members of Parliament (MPs) from entering the stadium through the created access. After a-30minitue back and forth, he directed them to another passage under a tree at the same gate.
The Hon MP for Akatsi South, Lawyer Benard Ahiafor lost his delegate’s tag in the process leaving the hook hanging around his kneck. Another Police Officer also refused him entry and would not want to hear or accept a prove that he is a Member of Parliament but all he wants to see to allow him in was a delegate’s tag.
It took the intervention of a photo journalist who persistently called out to the Officer that the man is an MP and should stop embarrassing him before the MP and all his colleagues were allowed to enter.
The whole actions of the police in the course of offering security appeared they are either unhappy coming to provide security for the event or have been instructed from above to cause troubles in the name of providing security by embarrassing and heckling even notable and prominent personalities at the congress.
In another scenario, Mr Otoo and one Sasu Mensah were spotted seriously heckling the Greater Accra Regional NDC Chairman Nii Ashie Moore.
The two officers refused to allow him entry to the Accra Sports Stadium with a KIA truck loaded with the chairs that would be used by the dignitaries of the party at the daise.
Nii Ashie Moore identified himself, and further told them he was the host chairman of the congress and chairs the security committee of the event but the two officers would not listen.
Mr. Otoo instructed his men not to allow the identified Greater Accra Regional NDC Chairman to enter with the vehicle loaded with chairs, and left the scene. Mr Sasu Mensah, Mr. Otoo’s colleague, would also not allow Ashie Moore and this continued for over 2 hours.
Many respected persons identified Nii Ashie Moore as the Greater Accra Regional NDC Chairman but the Police officer Mensah said “Greater Accra Regional Chairman and so what” and called the Chairman a “liar”, when Ashie Moore said he even has 3 slots to pack cars inside the stadium.
This behaviour annoyed the Chairman such that he told Mensah that “this is not Police Congress, Please”, but the Police officers, led by Sasu Mensah and Otoo remain adamant.
This inhumane actions of some of these police officers made it appears they were planted to create problems for the NDC followers to react in negotiation.
