PRESIDENT John Dramani Mahama has projected significant economic growth in intra-African trade, emphasizing the continent’s potential to thrive through innovation and strong leadership.

Speaking at the 2025 Security Opening in Munich, Germany, Mahama highlighted Africa’s vibrant youth as a key driver of progress.

“I foresee exponential growth in trade amongst African countries by leveraging its vibrant, brilliant youth eager to embrace innovation under effective leadership that can channel that energy,” he stated.

However, Mahama cautioned that Africa must adopt responsible leadership, reduce waste and stay adaptable to global economic shifts.

“Africa must brace itself to be more self-reliant, show responsible leadership that is not wasteful and be ready to adjust to global changes,” he lamented.

Addressing concerns over U.S. foreign aid, President John Mahama urged African nations to view potential funding cuts as an opportunity rather than a setback.

“Donald Trump’s decision to cut USAID support should be an opportunity for Africa to increase food production to guarantee food security rather than depending on U.S. food aid and support,” he asserted.

He also called on global powers such as China and India to step in at the multilateral level should the U.S. withdraw its financial backing.

Mahama’s remarks come at a crucial time as African nations push for economic independence and stronger regional trade partnerships in the wake of shifting international policies.
