THE 2024 ELECTION is over and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has emerged victorious. The euphoria is palpable, the celebrations vibrant and the mood jubilant.
Yet, as the dust settles, a sobering reality looms – this victory comes with monumental expectations and formidable challenges.
While the NDC has every right to bask in its triumph, the real work begins now. This election was less an endorsement of the NDC and more a resounding rebuke of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), whose tenure was marked by arrogance, incompetence, corruption, nepotism, impunity and economic hardship. For many Ghanaians, this vote represented a rejection of the status quo and a demand for change.
A Mandate for Accountability
This election signals a loud and clear message: Ghanaians are fed up with the culture of impunity and the perception that political power is a shortcut to unearned wealth. The new administration faces the daunting task of recovering alleged looted resources and holding those responsible to account. Anything less could lead to voter disenchantment long before the next election cycle.

President Mahama must walk a tightrope, balancing the need for justice with adherence to the rule of law. The fight against corruption must be transparent, non-partisan and fair – avoiding any semblance of political witch-hunting. Firmness, however, must not come at the expense of fundamental human rights.
Economic Challenges Loom
Beyond addressing corruption, the NDC government will have to tackle the economic challenges head-on. With the International Monetary Fund (IMF) closely watching, the administration must navigate a precarious financial landscape. Radical reforms, not business-as-usual governance, are imperative to restore confidence and steer the country toward recovery.
One critical step will be reducing the size of government far beyond what was promised during the campaign. Streamlined governance is not just a financial necessity but a demonstration of accountability and stewardship.
Policy Overhaul is Non-Negotiable
The NDC’s supermajority in Parliament presents a unique opportunity to pass laws that curb excesses and promote transparency. Priorities should include:
●Ending the abuse of sole-source contracts.
●Enacting stricter regulations against the acquisition of state property by government officials.
●Pursuing tax and constitutional reforms.
●Instituting measures to end illegal mining and foster merit-based governance.
These reforms must go beyond rhetoric to tangible actions that restore public trust.
The Weight of Expectations
The NDC must not underestimate the high stakes of this mandate. A failure to meet expectations could lead to a backlash as severe as the one the NPP experienced. President Mahama, serving his last term, has a unique opportunity to rewrite his legacy and correct the mistakes of his previous administration.
Mahama’s success—or failure—will define the NDC’s fate. A misstep will not only tarnish his legacy but could also doom the party in future elections.
Guardrails for Governance
Finally, the NDC’s supporters and leadership must foster a culture of accountability within the party. Constructive criticism and internal checks are crucial to preventing the arrogance and complacency that plagued their predecessors. Herd mentality and blind loyalty will only harm the party’s long-term prospects.
As the NDC charts its path forward, it must draw critical lessons from the NPP’s downfall. Governance is a privilege, not a right. Failure to heed the warning signs could lead to a precipitous fall from grace.
The victory lap is over. Now, the real work begins. Will the NDC rise to the occasion or falter under the weight of expectations? Time will tell.
