IN A DRAMATIC turn of events in the Dome-Kwabenya parliamentary elections, analysis of results from three key polling stations confirms a significant win for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and their candidate, Faustina Elikplim Akurugu.

The Electoral Commission’s (EC) declaration, finalized on December 8, 2024, by Returning Officer James Zachariah Cofie, named Akurugu as the Member of Parliament-Elect with a total of 51,634 votes, defeating her closest contender, Michael Aaron Oquaye Jnr of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who garnered 50,477 votes.

Critical Polling Stations Seal NDC’s Victory

The three polling stations in focus — Apostolic Church Ayigbe Town 2 (C060814), Soul Care Assem of God Freetown 2A (C060516A) and Abokobi Women Development Training Centre 2 (C060116) — have historically been strongholds of the NDC where the NPP had never won before. Results from these polling stations showed a commanding lead for Akurugu, particularly at the Abokobi Women Development Training Centre, where the NDC claimed 66.1% of the votes.

Analysis of Adjusted Results

A detailed review reveals that even if all registered voters from Abokobi Women Development Training Centre had cast their ballots for Oquaye Jnr, his revised tally would still fall short of Akurugu’s 51,411 votes. This confirms that the NDC’s dominance in these areas remains unshaken, securing their hold over the constituency.

Context and Implications

This outcome reflects the enduring strength of the NDC in key areas of Dome-Kwabenya, underscoring the challenges faced by the NPP in penetrating these electoral strongholds.

Benjamin Asante-Nyarko, Programmes Coordinator for Akurugu, emphasized the integrity of the results, further cementing her position as the Member of Parliament-Elect.

With the Jean Mensa led Electoral Commission bent on scheming and diverting the will of the constituents to favour the NPP Parliamentary Candidate, stay tuned for updates on this closely-watched election, as its implications reverberate across the political landscape.
