THE DEBATE over the naming of Ghana’s seat of government continues to generate public interest and the Director of Research, National Zango Caucus, Shaibu Mohammed Shamau  has joined the conversation with a passionate appeal.

Writing on December 27, 2024, Shaibu Mohammed Shamsu, popularly known as SHAMS, emphasized that reverting the name of the presidential residence to “Flagstaff House” should not be misconstrued as mere renaming but rather seen as the restoration of its original identity.

H. E. PROF. JANE NAANA OPOKU-AGYEMANG VICE-PRESIDENT-ELECT.

In his statement, SHAMS called on President-elect, John Dramani Mahama to take urgent steps to restore the historic name, “Flagstaff House” to the seat of government, arguing that, this move would honor Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, and protect his enduring legacy.

He highlighted the troubling trend of erasing Nkrumah’s contributions to Ghana’s history, describing such efforts as a deliberate attempt by detractors to diminish the nation’s founding father.

“The attempt by haters to obliterate all the legacies of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and wipe him out of history must not be allowed to fester,” SHAMS passionately argued.

He further urged the government to ensure that national facilities reflect the authentic history and identity of Ghana, pointing out that Nkrumah’s vision and leadership remain central to the country’s heritage.

Mohammed Shamsu also celebrated the recent political transition, expressing optimism that the new leadership would usher in a wave of positive changes, including the restoration of historically significant names.

He asserted that Ghana’s progress must align with preserving its cultural and historical integrity, adding, “Let this change lead to changing all the adulterated state facilities to reflect the real Ghana we all cherish. Dr. Nkrumah’s Ghana must not be allowed to sink to serve the wishes of his detractors.”

The call for the restoration of the Flagstaff House name comes at a time when many Ghanaians are engaging in debates about the symbolism and historical narratives tied to national institutions. SHAMS’s appeal underscores the need for leadership to uphold Ghana’s identity and honour its pioneers in nation-building.

As the discussion continues, one thing remains clear: preserving the legacy of Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah is not just about honouring the past — it is about inspiring future generations to build on the foundation of a peaceful, unified and proud Ghana.
