THE Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Hon. Mahama Ayariga, has taken a decisive step to fix Accra’s worsening traffic congestion.
In a statement issued in Accra, the Minister announced that he has authorized the Contra Flow Arrangement for the Aayalolo Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system.
According to him, gridlock has for too long strangled the economy and stolen productive time from commuters.
Under the new arrangement, from 6:00 AM to 9:00 AM in the morning and 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM in the evening, designated sections of the Kasoa, Adenta and Amasaman corridors will be reclaimed for the BRT.
This means authorized Aayalolo BRT buses will be allowed to travel against the normal flow of traffic during peak hours to bypass gridlock.
Hon. Ayariga says the move will drastically improve reliability, cut journey times for passengers, and ease pressure from private vehicles.
He has called for the full cooperation of all motorists and strict enforcement by the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service.
“Accra must move again,” he stressed.
