TEN people, including four officers of the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), are being held as investigations continue into recent narcotics trafficking through Ghana’s ports.
President John Dramani Mahama was briefed on the case on Thursday, September 17, 2026, when he chaired an urgent meeting with the country’s security chiefs.
The meeting reviewed ongoing investigations into the movement of narcotic drugs through Ghana’s ports, as well as the security structures and systems currently in place at the country’s borders.
A statement issued by the Presidency and signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications, said the President received a detailed briefing on the investigations.
It said the 10 individuals, including the four GRA Customs officers, were being held while investigations continued. The identities of those in custody and the specific allegations against them were not disclosed in the statement.
The meeting also reviewed the existing security arrangements and recommended additional measures to strengthen efforts to prevent narcotics trafficking through Ghana’s borders.
President Mahama subsequently directed the formation of an inter-agency task force to develop a detailed roadmap to tackle drug trafficking through the country’s borders.
The task force has been given two weeks to submit its roadmap based on the recommendations from the meeting.
The latest development comes amid heightened scrutiny of Ghana’s port security following recent international drug-trafficking cases linked to consignments from Ghana.
The Presidency said the government would continue to strengthen the systems and measures needed to prevent the trafficking of narcotic drugs through Ghana’s ports and borders.
