THE MEMBER of Parliament (MP) for Ayawaso East, Lawyer Ahmed Mohammed Baba Jamal, has supported all 363 newly admitted Senior High School (SHS) students in the constituency with essential educational and personal items to ease the financial burden on their families.
The support, which includes items for both day and boarding students, was presented at the Ghana National Mosque, Kanda, Accra, as the beneficiaries prepare to begin their secondary education.
Baba Jamal said the initiative was intended to support parents who, despite the implementation of free SHS education, still face financial difficulties in providing some of the basic items their children need when entering school.
“We know secondary education is free, but we also understand that there are parents who need support with some of the essential items required to take their children to school. That is why we decided to provide these items to support them,” he said.
He explained that the initiative was initially planned to cover fewer students but was expanded after it became clear that more families needed assistance.
According to him, the initiative was funded through a combination of resources available to his office, including his GETFund and health fund allocations, together with his personal resources.
For the 205 students registered as boarders, the package includes iron trunks, beds and buckets to help them meet some of their basic boarding-school requirements.
All 363 beneficiaries will receive scientific calculators, mathematical sets, exercise books, pencils, pens, pencil bags, sharpeners and erasers.
They will also receive gari, Milo, sugar, blankets and mosquito nets.
In addition to the items, Baba Jamal gave each student GH¢200 as transport support. The MCE for the Ayawaso East Municipal Assembly, Hon. Genius Ibrahim, added GH¢50 per student, bringing the total transport support to GH¢250 for each beneficiary.
The financial support is expected to provide further relief to parents and guardians as the students travel to their various schools to begin their SHS education.
Baba Jamal’s support for the students forms part of his broader interest in education and youth development in Ayawaso East. He has expressed his desire to see the constituency have its own Senior High School in the future, as part of efforts to expand educational opportunities for young people in the area.
The initiative is also expected to help strengthen support for families and encourage more young people in the constituency to pursue their education without being held back by financial difficulties.
Baba Jamal urged the beneficiaries to take their studies seriously, work hard and make their parents, guardians and the people of Ayawaso East proud. The presentation was attended by parents, guardians, community leaders and the beneficiaries.
