A NUMBER of government agencies have issued an urgent warning to the public after a large number of fish were found dead at the Tema Shipyard in Tema on April 6, 2026.

According to a joint statement from the Food and Drugs Authority, the Fisheries Commission, the Tema Metropolitan Assembly, and the Criminal Investigation Department, the incident was first noticed early in the morning between 5:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m.
Security officers at the shipyard discovered many dead fish floating in the water within a small area near the main unloading point. A team of officials quickly moved to the scene, secured the area, and began investigations.

Initial findings show no signs of deliberate human action, and there is currently no evidence of a major public health threat. However, experts are still working to determine the exact cause. Between 60 and 80 fish samples, along with water samples, have been collected and sent for laboratory testing.
The authorities are advising the public not to collect, buy, or eat fish from the Tema Shipyard or nearby waters until further notice. They say fish sold in approved markets outside the affected area are safe to eat if properly cooked.

They also urge anyone who sees more dead or distressed fish to report it to the FDA. People who feel unwell after eating fish—such as experiencing vomiting, diarrhoea, dizziness, or skin irritation—should seek medical attention immediately and inform health workers about what they ate.
The agencies say investigations are ongoing and the public will be updated. Citizens are encouraged to rely only on official information as efforts continue to uncover the cause of the incident.
