GHANA’S diplomatic excellence and growing global leadership were on full display at a high-profile Gala Reception organised in the United Kingdom to honour the Commonwealth Secretary-General, Hon. Shirley Ayorkor Botchway, and Ghana’s High Commissioner to the UK and Ireland, H.E. Mrs. Sabah Zita Benson.

The event, attended by traditional authorities, senior diplomats, leaders of Ghanaian unions, and members of the Ghanaian community in the UK, served as a celebration of Ghana’s contribution to international governance and public service.

Delivering the keynote address, H.E. Mrs. Benson expressed gratitude to the organisers and described the occasion as symbolic of unity, heritage and service to nation.

She noted that the week had been particularly historic for her, having recently met the King of England and later being honoured in the presence of the Ga Mantse, His Royal Majesty King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, who graced the gala alongside other distinguished traditional leaders, including Manye Naa Tsotso I and Nii Mei Naa Mei.

H.E. Mrs. Benson highlighted the significance of her appointment as the first Ghanaian female High Commissioner to the United Kingdom and Ireland since 1957, stressing that the recognition accorded her was a collective honour shared with the people of Ghana, her family, colleagues and the many women whose perseverance continues to break leadership barriers.

The gala also recognised Hon. Shirley Ayorkor Botchway for making history as the first African woman and Ghanaian to be elected Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, a feat widely hailed as a major milestone for Ghana and the African continent.

According to Mrs. Benson, the achievements of both honourees reflect Ghana’s steady rise in global diplomacy and inclusive leadership.
She commended the Ghanaian diaspora for their role as ambassadors of Ghana’s culture and values, noting that their intellectual, economic and social contributions continue to support national development.

The High Commissioner called for stronger partnerships between Ghana and the United Kingdom, stressing the need to invest in the youth, strengthen national institutions and promote innovation to secure Ghana’s future.

The event was organised by the National Congress of Ghanaian Unions, in collaboration with Ten Talents Global and Access Media, and was described by participants as elegant, well-coordinated, and impactful.

In her closing remarks, Mrs. Benson thanked the organisers, distinguished guests, and members of the Ghanaian community for their support, while expressing special appreciation to her husband and the staff of the Ghana High Commission for their dedication and professionalism.

The gala ended on a note of renewed commitment to unity, collaboration and service, reinforcing Ghana’s presence and influence on the international stage.
