GHANA has joined regional efforts to combat Lassa fever and other emerging infectious diseases at the ongoing 2nd International Conference on Lassa Fever (LIC 2025) in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.
Representing the Minister of Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandohl, at the conference, Ghana’s delegate expressed the country’s strong commitment to regional health security and collaboration.
The event, organized by the West African Health Organisation (WAHO) in partnership with key international health institutions, is being held under the theme: “Beyond Borders: Strengthening Regional Cooperation to Combat Lassa Fever and Emerging Infectious Diseases.”
Discussions at the conference have focused on promoting vaccine and diagnostic research, building sustainable public health systems, and enhancing regional coordination in disease surveillance and response.
Lassa fever, endemic to West Africa, is transmitted primarily by rodents. Its prevention and control require a combination of early diagnosis, proper hygiene, and public health education.

This regional health dialogue strongly aligns with President John Dramani Mahama’s vision of strengthening healthcare delivery in Ghana through international cooperation, research, and innovation.
The conference presents an opportunity for Ghana to collaborate with health experts across Africa to develop effective strategies to tackle infectious diseases and improve public health outcomes continent-wide.
