TRAGEDY has struck Sudan ahead of their crucial World Cup qualifiers, as a devastating landslide wiped out an entire village in the Marra Mountains of Darfur, reportedly killing over 1,000 people.

According to a statement by the Sudan Liberation Movement/Army, the village was completely destroyed, with only one survivor found so far. The affected area is under their control.
The national team, led by Ghanaian coach Akwasi Appiah, is preparing to face Senegal on Friday, September 5, and Togo on Tuesday, September 9, in Group B of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
Coach Appiah and several players are believed to be mourning personal losses as the disaster likely affected the families of some squad members. The emotional toll adds a heavy burden to an already challenging qualification journey.

The Loop extends heartfelt condolences to the people of Sudan, especially the national team and Coach Appiah. Ghanaians are urged to remember them in their prayers as they take to the field under such heartbreaking circumstances.
Group B Teams: Senegal, DR Congo, Mauritania, Togo, Sudan, South Sudan.
In these trying times, The Loop calls on sports journalists in Ghana and beyond to dedicate airtime in solidarity with Sudan’s national team and Coach Appiah. Let us uplift them with our support, empathy, and prayers.
