RITA Naa Odoley Sowah, the Deputy Minister of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, has revealed that all traditional leaders across Ghana have received their first quarter allowances from the government.
She added that the second quarter payments are also expected to be disbursed shortly. She made the disclosure during the launch of the 2025 Ghana Chieftaincy Awards in Accra on Thursday, July 17.
According to Hon. Sowah, the move reflects government’s commitment to empowering traditional authorities beyond their ceremonial roles, enabling them to contribute meaningfully to local and national development.
“These awards must ignite a deeper national conversation: How do we harness the moral authority, cultural wisdom, and strategic position of our traditional leaders to shape a better Ghana?” she posited.
She applauded the organizers of the Chieftaincy Awards for spotlighting the role of traditional leadership in national development and urged Ghanaians to respect and uphold Ghana’s rich cultural heritage.

“Any nation that honours its elders secures its future,” she emphasized.
Hon. Rita Naa Odoley Sowah reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to supporting traditional leadership, indicating that through President Mahama’s leadership, the government is taking practical steps to resource chiefs and queens across the country.
