IN A RARE and touching show of appreciation, the Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS), Major General William Agyapong, hosted a farewell meeting for all Two-Star Generals of the Ghana Armed Forces at his office in Burma Camp on Monday, April 28, 2025.
The gathering marked a significant moment in the Ghana Armed Forces’ leadership transition, as Major General Agyapong expressed deep gratitude for the exceptional service and professionalism of the senior officers.

He extended thanks from the President and Commander-in-Chief, emphasizing their vital contributions to national defence and stability.
As part of ongoing efforts to enhance command and control within the military, the CDS announced that a number of the Generals present would be honourably released from active service, in accordance with Ghana Armed Forces regulations.

Speaking on behalf of the outgoing officers, Major General Irvine Aryeetey, Commandant of the National College of Defence Studies, noted that leadership transitions within the Armed Forces are not unusual but rooted in long-standing tradition.
He cited previous examples such as the succession from Lt Gen OB Akwa to Vice Admiral Seth Amoama – five intakes apart – and from Vice Admiral Amoama to General Thomas Oppong-Peprah – three intakes apart.

The current transition from General Oppong-Peprah to Major General Agyapong, which spans four intakes, he said, is consistent with military precedent.
He praised the initiative by the new CDS to hold a formal and dignified farewell meeting, describing it as an unprecedented and honourable gesture.
The event concluded with a luncheon, where Major General Agyapong wished the outgoing Generals success in their future endeavours.
Also in attendance were the Service Chiefs and the Chief of Staff at the General Headquarters, underscoring the importance of the occasion.
