PROSPECTIVE pilgrims preparing for the 2027 Hajj have been advised to undergo the required medical screening and meet the health standards set by Saudi Arabian authorities to avoid possible disqualification.
The Pilgrims Affairs Office of Ghana (PAOG) has outlined the medical tests, vaccinations and health conditions that will be considered during the screening exercise to determine whether pilgrims are fit to undertake the pilgrimage.
In a statement issued by its Director of Communications, Mohammed Amin Lamptey, the Office explained that the screening goes beyond routine vaccinations to include a comprehensive medical assessment.
The assessment includes a review of medical and drug histories, physical examinations and fitness checks. Laboratory tests may include a full blood count, kidney and liver function tests, blood sugar tests, an electrocardiogram (ECG) and a urine pregnancy test.
The required vaccinations include meningococcal ACWY, yellow fever, polio and COVID-19, subject to the applicable health requirements.
Medical Conditions That May Lead to Disqualification
PAOG cautioned that prospective pilgrims with certain serious medical conditions could be declared medically unfit and denied a Hajj visa.
The conditions identified in the statement include:
1. Major organ failure: This includes kidney failure requiring dialysis, advanced heart failure and liver cirrhosis.
2. Severe neurological or psychiatric disorders: Serious conditions affecting the brain, nervous system or mental health may affect a person’s eligibility.
3. Active cancer: Patients undergoing chemotherapy for active cancer may be considered medically unfit.
4. Active infectious diseases: These include open tuberculosis and other conditions that may pose a risk to public health.
5. Certain pregnancy conditions: Pregnancy beyond 28 to 30 weeks and high-risk pregnancies may affect eligibility, subject to the applicable medical guidelines.

The Office, under the leadership of its Chairman, Hon. Alhaji Abdul-Rauf Tanko Ibrahim, urged prospective pilgrims to comply with the medical requirements and obtain the necessary vaccinations through the appropriate medical channels.
It also advised pilgrims to prepare for the extreme heat and large crowds they may encounter during the Hajj in Saudi Arabia.
PAOG encouraged all prospective pilgrims to take the screening seriously to protect their health and avoid difficulties during the visa approval process.
