THE WORAWORA Traditional Council in the Biakoye District of the Oti Region has launched the 2026 Akwantutenten Festival to mobilise resources for development in the area.

The launch was held at the Worawora Durbar Grounds under the leadership of the Woraworahene, Daasebre Sarfro Baah III.

This year’s festival is on the theme: “Celebrating Our Heritage, Building Our Future Together.”

Daasebre Sarfro Baah III said Akwantutenten, which means “The Great Migration,” commemorates the historic journey of the people of Worawora from Kuntanase in the Ashanti Region around 1732, through Atibie, Akwamufie and Nkonya, to their present settlement.

He said the festival offers a platform for the people to reconnect with their history and culture while mobilising support for socio-economic development.

The 2026 edition is scheduled for October 24 to November 1, with the Grand Durbar on October 31 at the Dwabrem Park in Worawora.

The Chairman of the Planning Committee said this year’s celebration will focus on development. He explained that funds raised during the Grand Durbar will be used to renovate the Worawora Local Authority Basic School and construct mini-bridges to link farming communities.

He said the projects form part of efforts by the Traditional Council to address critical needs and improve living conditions.

The Council has invited the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Ms Abla Dzifa Gomashie, as well as the Member of Parliament and the District Chief Executive for Biakoye.

Corporate bodies including Nestlé Ghana Limited and BB Energy Ghana, and citizens of Worawora both home and abroad, have also been invited.

Activities lined up include a clean-up exercise, free health screening, homecoming, street carnival, youth and education forum, quiz competition, cooking competition, Ofie Bepo Mountain Climb, Grand Durbar and thanksgiving service.

Speaking at the launch, the Apegya-hene of Worawora, Nana Kwadwo Nyarko, said the festival commemorates the struggles and resilience of their ancestors, who endured wars and attacks before settling at Worawora. He urged the youth to learn from that history and called on all indigenes to return home for the celebration.

The Queenmother, Nana Safoaa Awerewa II, said the festival had not been celebrated for more than 25 years due to various challenges. She described its revival as historic and said it will restore cultural pride, strengthen unity and inspire collective action for development.

The Traditional Council appealed to all sons and daughters of Worawora at home and in the diaspora to participate actively and support the development projects.
