DR. MARY AWUSI, CEO, GFZA.

Nat’l Tymes News Desk

THE CHIEF Executive Officer of the Ghana Free Zones Authority (GFZA), Dr. Mary Awusi, has assured investors and businesses operating within the Tema Export Processing Zone (EPZ) of the Authority’s commitment to improving safety measures following the recent fire outbreak at Melcom’s warehouse.

Dr. Awusi gave the assurance when she led a high-powered management team of the Authority to inspect the affected warehouse on Saturday, July 5, 2026.

The visit was aimed at assessing the extent of damage caused by the fire, expressing the Authority’s support to Melcom, and engaging key stakeholders on ways to strengthen fire prevention and emergency response within the Tema EPZ.

During the inspection, Dr. Awusi met with a representative of Melcom, Mr. Govind, as well as the Tema Regional Fire Officer, who briefed the delegation on the circumstances surrounding the fire and the emergency response mounted by the Ghana National Fire Service to contain the blaze.

Speaking after the inspection, the GFZA Chief Executive stressed that protecting businesses, investments, and workers within the Free Zones remains a top priority for the Authority.

She said the GFZA would continue to work closely with the Ghana National Fire Service to improve emergency preparedness, strengthen fire response systems, and reduce the risk of future fire outbreaks within the enclave.

According to Dr. Awusi, enhancing fire safety is essential to safeguarding lives and property while ensuring that businesses operating in the Free Zones continue to thrive without unnecessary disruptions.

She also disclosed that the Ghana Free Zones Authority, in collaboration with the Ghana National Fire Service, has begun investigations into the cause of the fire. The investigations are expected to establish the origin of the incident and recommend measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

Dr. Awusi reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to maintaining a safe, secure, and investor-friendly environment across all Free Zones enclaves, adding that the GFZA will continue working with all relevant stakeholders to uphold high safety standards.

The GFZA Chief Executive was accompanied by the Director of Corporate Affairs, PR and Aftercare, Dr. Patience Agbleze Acorlor; the Director of the Tema Office, Mr. Edward Adu-Ntiamoah; the Head of Estate and Zones, Mr. Benjamin Obeng; and other officials of the Authority during the visit.
