PRESIDENT John Mahama has announced that a new Axle Road Policy will soon be introduced as part of efforts to improve Ghana’s road infrastructure.
This comes as work officially begins on the 73.6-kilometre Takoradi to Cape Coast dual carriageway.
The highway project, funded under the government’s Big Push initiative, is aimed at opening up major roads to boost trade and investment.
The redevelopment will transform the existing road into a modern dual-carriageway with better drainage, nine interchanges, 10 bridges, 15 footbridges, 20 kilometres of service roads, a rest stop, and an axle-weigh station.

Expected to be completed in 24 months, the road also forms part of the ECOWAS Abidjan-Lagos Corridor Highway Project.
The sod-cutting ceremony was held at Assorku Essaman in the Shama District of the Western Region. It was attended by traditional leaders including the Paramount Chief of Essikado and President of the Western Regional House of Chiefs, Nana Kobina Nketsia V, and the Chief of Assorku Essaman, Nana Kofi Ewuah V.
Traditional leaders and residents in the Western Region have expressed excitement as President John Mahama launched the construction of the Takoradi to Cape Coast dual-carriage highway.
Many said the existing stretch had deteriorated badly over the years, and the new project brings renewed hope.
President Mahama said the project is a key part of his government’s agenda to boost trade, improve road safety, and promote national development.
Once completed, the highway is expected to improve access to the Takoradi Port, enhance trade and logistics in the Western Region, and support tourism along the corridor.
The project will also create about 2,000 direct jobs and 6,000 indirect jobs to boost local employment and economic empowerment.
